This year our
Association again put up a stall at the 2015 Perth Chinese New Year Fair 珀斯2015华人新年文化节at James Street in Northbridge, to promote Hakka
culture & history.
The Fair ran from 11am
to 9pm on Sunday 22 February 2015 but
we were up and running from 9.30am and left at dusk.
This year the most noticeable feature was the first public performance of
the Kilin anywhere in Australia. HakkaWA created history again!
Our HakkaWA Kilin Troupe 西澳客家公会麒麟团performed with two
Lion Dance Troupe from Yarn Yee Tong 仁义堂and from Choy Li Fut 蔡李佛 all the way down James
St from Mountain Terrace to Nicks Lane, towards Chinatown, then from Roe St to
Lake St. The curious crowd was clearly impressed!
Xiao Ye 小叶performed Calligraphy and Chinese painting,
which drew good crowds every year.
The Kilin was put on
exhibition, and the Kilin instruments were played, at the Stall. This attracted
a lot of enquiries about this curious mystical creature.
As in previous years,
the stall was a big success, thanks to all the members who volunteered any
number of hours of time possible. It was also fun for us members to mingle
during the Chinese New Year period.
Volunteering members
include Xiao Ye, Norman Chia, Ricky Chia, Isabelle Cham, James
Chong, Chong Fah, Dr YS Yow, Peter Kwan and Family, Gian & Alison Wong,
Lina Loo & Elia. Many members also dropped by to say Giong Hee Fatt Choy!
It's so good to see the Kilin (Unicorn) in Australia for the first time! Growing up we see it every Chinese New Year, but have never seen it since we moved to Australia. Thank you HakkaWA for rekindling my memories!
